Short Personal History

  • Born in Reykjavik, Iceland
  • Attended primary and secondary school in Reykjavik
  • Studied Biology (BSc) at the University
    of Iceland (1971–1974)
  • Studied Soil Microbiology (PhD) at the University of Wales, UK (1975–1978)
  • Worked on an alfafla legume improvement project at the University of Minnesota, USA (1978–1980)
  • Worked for the United Nations, at the Joint FAO/IAEA Programme in Austria, supporting legume improvement and food production projects in developing countries (1981–2010)
  • Head of the Soil Science Laboratory of the FAO/IAEA Agriculture and Biotechnology Laboratory (1997–2010)
  • Published several books and scientific articles in international journals on biological nitrogen fixation of leguminous crops
  • Married to Helga from Kufstein, Tyrol, in 1982. Daughters, Elva and Lilja, born in 1984 and 1986, respectively
  • Working on art using acrylic paint since 1989
  • Exhibitions in Austria, France, Iceland, Mexico and the USA
